Puzzle With A Purpose

Contributed By: Activity Director Merry

For many people, doing puzzles are fun - jigsaw, word search, sudoku, crossword, etc. So I encourage our residents to enjoy the process. As you can see, one of our dedicated residents is determined to assemble this complex peacock puzzle. Everyday, we have residents that work diligently on puzzles that consist of nature scenes all the way to John Wayne pics.

As a caregiver, I see puzzling as much more than a fun activity and am thrilled to create situations where those in my care can reap additional benefits. In this case, the process builds confidence in taking on a challenge and hones problem solving skills. For some, it improves the ability to stay focused or to stop focusing on negative issues for periods of time, which is a big plus. Physically, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination are put to the test. When I can, I involve others in the puzzling process to add teamwork and social interaction. And then there is the smile of accomplishment when someone successfully completes a puzzle.
